There’s a rumble deep in the musical jungle and it’s coming your way! From out of nowhere you’re bombarded with beats and basslines. The floor underneath you shudders and shakes with dirty breakz and filthy house music. Nasty electro snakes around your ears and your ankles compelling you to move. The air turns hot and heavy. All of a sudden you realize you’re in the middle of The Adventures of the Purple Monkey . . . and you love it!
Once in a while a new night emerges that has everyone wetting their knickers with anticipation. Well grab hold of your emergency underwear boys and girls. Such an occasion is about to present itself to you.
On Saturday August 19th, at one of London’s most luscious new underground venues, Babalou in Brixton, The Adventures of the Purple Monkey lands in front of a panting capital. HarderFaster caught up with resident and all round main man Darren Pearce of JDS to get the lowdown on his latest clubbing concept. . . .

So — the Purple Monkey. Where on earth did he come from?
It was one of Julian’s friends that came up with it after a good night out and we just thought, “Wicked, we’re gonna use that!”
Did you have some sort of insane breaks character in your head?
Once we’d finished the track we knew that it could have a strong image to go with it — hence the detail of the monkey and his strange looks.
What’s his personality like?
He can be very unpredictable but is always very cool and is good as long as he enjoys the party!
If JDS and the Purple Monkey were to take us all on an adventure, where would it be to?
Probably Australia. He is universally adored out there and he loves the attention.
What would we do?
Just party with the Purple One, baby!

You’ve personally got a history of long-term residencies. You played Peach for 11 years, Sunny Side Up for 9 and Trinity at the Chunnel Club for 8. Would you like to see the Adventures of the Purple Monkey run for the same amount of time?
Of course. We want to bring in new djs as well and give them a chance of playing out, as it’s very hard nowadays. There are always a lot of other nights that will be in competition with you so for it to run for that amount of time you’ve got to have something extra special, a secret ingredient. But when you’ve got it, your party goes through the roof.
What makes you think the Purple Monkey has what it takes to rise above the rest?
Because the venue is perfect for a great party. Also we won’t be playing only one type of music so the night will be more interesting. A lot of other nights just concentrate on one music policy but we want to break that mould, we want to make dirty music for happy clubbers!

Babalou — there’s quite a bit of buzz about how underground it is. What do you think of it as a venue?
Because it has a low ceiling it’s easier to get a party going in there, also there’s a really nice vibe about it. With great music you just know it’s gonna work as a venue.
And it doesn’t bother you that it’s in a crypt??
Haha, that just adds to it.
What sort of set can we expect from you on Saturday?
Some really dirty funky tunes and some specials for the night.
Your other two residents are Johnny Arthur and Danny Mac — what made you want to join with these two djs in particular?
I’ve known Danny for a while and in my humble opinion, he’s a great dj. Johnny just gives us another dimension, this guy is really on his way up and the amount of support he’s getting from top names in the industry in unbelievable — until you hear him play.
You’re teaming up with quite a lot of other nights, including Chicken Nickers, the Digital Gimp Society and C64. What makes you want to bring other artists in to your night?
Just so the vibe is always fresh, plus it’s good to have lots of friends! We want people to be able to come down even if none of their mates are out for the night. We want a party where people feel they could come down on their own and still have a great night because of the caliber of people inside.

How important was the album ‘The Adventures of the Purple Funky Monke’ to JDS?
It was something we wanted to do for years but with dance music it’s hard to get an album out there. So we were over the moon when it finally happened and the reactions we got were even better than we thought we’d ever get.
Where do you see the Purple Monkey going? There are rumors abound that you’re taking him to Las Vegas?
Yes that is true but because he’s a Purple Monkey it’s gonna be hard to get him through customs — he’s gonna require a lot of make up!
What would you say to anyone who was wondering what to do this Saturday and was thinking about the Purple Monkey?
Come on down, have a few drinks and wiggle ya butt to some dirty funky music and find some happy people enjoying life.
How is your label Punk Funk Records doing? What’s coming down that particular pipeline?
It’s been doing very well actually, better than expected, as it’s only a small project but we’ve been number one with a few of the releases in the break beat download chart so that’s always a good sign. We have five releases backed up and Paradox 3000, my other project with Angel Farringdon, is going really well. We’re also going to be working on some tracks this year with a vocalist we have found on MySpace.
Anything else we should know as far as JDS/Darren Pearce is concerned?
The next JDS release, ‘Shake It’, is out on Phonetic Records in September and look out for some remixes coming your way. We are working on new tracks at the moment so watch this space!

We’re about to give London what it wants and what it needs – a night of pure quality music in the most amazing underground setting. We’re going back to the times when clubbing was an intimate experience, when the dance floor was packed with people who knew and appreciated their sounds. Joining forces with DJs who know how to rock a room to its very foundations, the Purple Monkey is going to spank the ass off London’s Saturday night…
